Air Pollution

Air pollution can occur at every stage of ethanol production. Particles as small a 3 microns to 10 microns escape into the air at various stages of production. When inhaled, particles of this size can enter the blood stream and organs causing health problems. Some of these emmissions are toxic. These volatile organic compounds (VOCs) include acetaldehyde, acrolein, ethanol, formaldehyde, 2 -furaldehyde, methanol, aecetic acid and lactic acid. Nitrogen oxides (NOx1), sulfur oxides (SOx1) and carbon monoxide (CO) are also produced. Other pollution will be emitted from burning biomass. It is important to have air pollution controls at every stage. Even with scrubbers and thermal oxidizers, pollution can NOT be eliminated
